Who Wants to be a Businessaire?
Description: Chicken Soup for the aspiring business owner's soul!! With its use of humorous anecdotes, congenial wit and gentle wisdom, "Who Wants to Be a Businessaire?" is a book that helps aspiring entrepreneurs and anyone interested in business to "feel" what it is like to be in business for oneself. Unlike a "how-to" book, it is more akin to a virtual reality introduction to what new business owners face day in and day out. In its way, the book helps to develop the type of instincts that new entrepreneurs need to survive, succeed, and eventually prosper in their new business ventures.
GREETINGS FROM THE OTHER SIDE: Welcome to you New Business (Ad)Venture
Description: You are an entrepreneur! Congratulations! It is an identity that you gradually assumed, but somehow you knew that you were always destined to get there. You are the king now, and for that reason, you need to think like a king. The petty problems you faced as an hourly employee seem insignificant in the wake of the issues and challenges with which you now contend. You no longer anxiously await “payday,” but instead, you are anxious over how you will cover “payroll.” You have undertaken a level of responsibility that is not even remotely comparable to what you faced as a mere employee.
Your livelihood depends upon your business. You need to make decisions that will help it to prosper and grow. You need it for you and your family and your employees and your customers and Good Ole’ Uncle Sam and for . . . . You get the point. The success of your business is on your shoulders for the benefit of you and the people affected by that business. If this all sounds a little overwhelming, then take heed. In Greetings from the Other Side, we will look at how business owners like yourself have dealt with many of the issues you are facing. We will laugh, we will cry, we will think, and we will relate. It is like a group intervention that only costs you the cover price. So, on those terrible days when you have had enough of owning your own business and cannot fathom what inspired you to take on your new (ad)venture, read a chapter or two. You may end up feeling a little less alone at the top.
THINGS I'VE LEARNED ALONG THE WAY: More Big Advice for Small Business
Description: A friend of mine once told me, “don’t ever drink with a man who cannot laugh at himself because you will feel worse than hungover before your first sip!” That being said, there are a lot of people who complain about being in business for themselves. There are a lot of people who tell you the pitfalls but never mention the excitement. Some people will dissuade you with tales of their own regret. If those folks sound like fun to you, then, by all means, lend them your ears. But . . . if there is any chance that you can step outside of yourself just long enough to recognize the humor and irony and stupidity and dumb luck that entrepreneurs face daily then, by all means, read on, being in business for yourself may not be a comedy, but that does not mean it has to be a drama.
Perhaps it is best to think of it as a variety show. Lots of things will happen, and no two shows will be the same. One act will be a string quartet, and the next might be a standup comedian. In business for yourself, you can never be sure what the day will bring, and that alone can make the endeavor worth it. So, if you can take yourself a little less seriously for a few moments, go ahead and read a chapter or two. You will probably be entertained, and you might learn a thing or two.
The Winter (Fiction)
When the inhabitants of a large Midwestern city encounter a series of weather patterns and cold fronts that combine to become one of the fiercest winters in history, it becomes the job of a special agency of the city government to respond to the crisis. Although originally organized for purposes of reporting on emergencies, the Department of Emergency Response must take an active role in helping the people of the city to survive the unbearable conditions that are wreaking sheer havoc and tragedy at every turn.
Jeff Scott is a young but experienced bureaucrat in the DER who, by a strange twist of fate, ascends to the head of the agency just as the Winter begins. Lacking the political savvy of his predecessor and in the face of the most severe challenges ever put to the agency, Jeff finds himself struggling to lead the department that is responsible for responding to the Winter’s constant threat. While being pressured by a ruthless mayor who is skeptical of his ambitions, Jeff relies upon the people in the department and the mayor’s political boss to try to cope. When a series of tragedies caused by the Winter and Jeff’s slight indiscretions threaten to derail his attempts actually to help the city, Jeff faces a war that he seemingly cannot win.
The Winter is a chronicle of a human struggle against forces far superior to those that any one person can overcome. As each chapter opens with a vignette detailing different aspects of war, the stories unfold to depict the existential reality of persistent and seemingly unrelenting conflict. With action, drama, suspense, and political intrigue, The Winter examines humanity’s endeavor to endure in the face of uncompromising challenges.
